The project aims to reduce the burden of malaria through the distribution of Insecticide Treated Nets distribution to increase the overall number of households protected from malaria. The project through sensitization at the community level will create demand for ITNs thereby encouraging acceptance and utilization of personal protective equipment such as the ITNs and face masks, and sanitizers to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in vulnerable communities.

Executive Summary

AFRYDEV, a humanitarian and development organization with over 9 years of experience in Northeast Nigeria, aims to promote safe societies and empower conflict-affected communities to prevent recruitment, radicalization, and engagement in violent extremist activities, conflict, and gender-based violence. With a focus on youth, women, and girls, implementing interventions to enhance well-being and social mobility. From September 2022 to October 2022 AFRYDEV undertook a project with the aim of reducing the burden of malaria in Yobe State. The project involved the distribution of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) to households, increasing the number of protected households. Through community-level sensitization, the project created the demand for ITNs and promoted the acceptance and utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks and sanitizers. The project aims to enhance knowledge and safe behavior among civilians and humanitarian workers in vulnerable communities on the threat of explosive ordinance through risk education to mitigate hazards of explosive ordinance. AFRYDEV is providing capacity-building training on Explosive ordinance risk education for humanitarian workers, government agencies, and community members, capacity building for Community Mobilization Assistants, and sensitization sessions targeting 4,000 benefices in 4 affected communities of Geidam L.GA.

The outcome is an increased level of knowledge, skills, and preparedness among these stakeholders to address the threat of explosive ordinance effectively.
Capacity building for Community Mobilization Assistants: The project includes capacity building for Community Mobilization Assistants, which aims to strengthen their skills and abilities in mobilizing the community and creating awareness about the risks associated with the explosive ordinance. This outcome involves empowering these assistants to effectively engage and educate the community members.
Sensitization sessions: The project includes sensitization sessions targeting 4,000 beneficiaries in 4 affected communities of Geidam L.GA. Executive Summary

AFRYDEV is a humanitarian and development organization dedicated to improving the well-being of conflict-affected communities in Northeast Nigeria. With a focus on youth, women, and girls, we aim to foster positive social mobility and prevent the recruitment and radicalization of individuals, as well as their involvement in violent extremist activities, conflict, and gender-based violence. Since 2013, The Organization has been actively engaged in designing and implementing interventions that drive positive change and promote safe societies. One critical aspect of the project is to address the threat of explosive ordinance in vulnerable communities. AFRYDEV is committed to enhancing knowledge and promoting safe behavior through comprehensive risk education programs. These initiatives aim to mitigate the hazards associated with the explosive ordinance and protect community members and humanitarian workers. To achieve this, the organization provided capacity-building training on Explosive Ordinance Risk Education (EORE) to humanitarian workers, government agencies, and community members. Through the training, participants acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively identify, assess, and address the risks posed by explosive ordinance. In addition, AFRYDEV conducted capacity-building programs for Community Mobilization Assistants, empowered them to engage with their communities and mobilize support for risk education efforts. These assistants play a crucial role in disseminating vital information and promoting safe practices within their communities. To reach the most affected areas, AFRYDEV conducted sensitization sessions in four communities within Geidam L.GA, benefiting approximately 4,000 individuals. These sessions raised awareness about the dangers of the explosive ordinance and educated community members on the appropriate measures to mitigate these risks. By implementing these technical interventions, AFRYDEV created safer environments, empowered communities, and prevented accidents and incidents related to the explosive ordinance. The organization remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting the well-being of conflict-affected communities in Northeast Nigeria through evidence-based and impactful interventions.

Executive Summary

The African Youths for Peace Development and Empowerment Foundation (AFRYDEV), with funding support from USAID through the Nigerian Northeast Connection program, implemented a project in Fune Local Government Area (LGA) to strengthen early warning detection systems. The project aimed to identify early warning triggers, reduce the threat of ISWAP infiltration, and prevent the impact of violent extremism in vulnerable communities. AFRYDEV successfully identified 21 existing early warning systems and engaged 9 platforms within three project communities. Advocacy visits to government stakeholders and community leaders resulted in collaboration and community ownership for project sustainability. The advocacy efforts also improved communication between security actors and community members, enhancing the response to reported threats. AFRYDEV developed an Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) directory and referral pathway through mapping and validation meetings with stakeholders. A capacity-building training was conducted to strengthen the knowledge and collaboration between the new and existing early warning platforms in the 3 LGAs. Participants acknowledged the challenges in collaboration with security actors, the training also facilitated understanding, synergy, and collaboration with the police, DSS, and NSCDC.

A joint monitoring mission and experience-sharing session were conducted to assess the project’s impact and strategize for ownership and sustainability. The findings highlighted the expansion of the project to other wards and communities, increased participation of security actors, and the need for EWER training for Traditional Institute. Overall, this project made significant contributions toward enhancing early warning and response mechanisms, promoting community engagement, and reducing the victimization of populations by insurgents.

Executive Summary

The project was designed to address the pressing needs of conflict-affected populations in the Geidam and Yunusari LGAs of Yobe State. The project is based on recent data and assessments conducted by COOPI and AFRYDEV, highlighting the dire situation of food insecurity, economic deterioration, and lack of livelihood opportunities in the region.

The conflicts in North-East Nigeria have severely impacted primary food production, leaving a significant portion of the population reliant on food assistance programs. The limited access to farmland has resulted in reduced harvests and profits for farmers, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The high levels of food insecurity have led to acute malnutrition, affecting the well-being of the communities.

The project aims to address these challenges by focusing on livelihood support, capacity building, and rehabilitation efforts. By providing start-up capital, appropriate tools, and business skills training, the project seeks to empower small business owners and enhance their operations. Additionally, the project aims to improve market systems and infrastructure to reduce the financial and opportunity costs incurred by communities in accessing key supplies.

The assessments conducted by COOPI reveal the urgent need to prioritize income generation activities and economic reintegration programming, such as Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), in Geidam and Yunusari. This will not only improve self-reliance but also enhance community resilience and reduce vulnerability.

In conclusion, this project addresses the critical challenges faced by conflict-affected populations in Geidam and Yunusari. By providing livelihood support, capacity building, and infrastructure rehabilitation, the project aims to promote self-reliance, enhance community resilience, and decrease vulnerability. The findings from the needs assessments highlight the urgency and importance of implementing sustainable and effective interventions to improve the lives and livelihoods of the affected communities.
